🌦️ Weather Magic
Every farmer scans the sky. A witch-farmer edits it. Weather-working is where the two halves of Tara’s life shake hands most profitably: the spells live in your grimoire, but the payoff lands squarely in your fields and fishing spots.
The Weather Spells
Weather magic arrives, like all magic here, through the main story and coven tasks (see Spells & Rituals for how incantations are learned, written at the desk, and consumed when read aloud). The verified weather workings:
| Incantation | Effect | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Summon Rain Spell | Calls a day of rain | One day |
| Summon Wind Spell | Sets the wind blowing | One day |
| Summon Storm Spell | Strong winds and lightning | One storm |
| Summon Night Spell | Not weather, strictly — but it brings the dark, and pairs beautifully with a stormy mood | Until morning |
Remember the golden rule of incantations: each written scroll is consumed on casting. A day of rain costs you the magic and ingredients that went into writing it — worth every drop at the right moment, wasteful on a week you’d have watered anyway.
Rain: The Farmer’s Cheat Code
The Summon Rain Spell is the one you’ll write again and again. Rain waters every planted tile at once — no watering can, no trudging, no energy spent — which converts directly into hours of your morning back. Point that windfall at the mines, the fishing rod, or your long-suffering social calendar (Friendship).
When rain magic earns its keep
- Big planting days. Sowed half the farm this morning? Summon rain tonight and skip tomorrow’s watering marathon entirely.
- Summer droughts. Fairhaven’s summers run hot and dry, and thirsty crops and trees drain the island’s groundwater — there’s even a story stretch (For Crying Drought Loud) where the drought becomes everyone’s problem and rain magic becomes the answer. When wells run low, the mundane fallback is bottled water from the Dahl General Store at 60 coins a bottle — or free from Cameron on Wednesdays and Sundays, bless his suspicious heart. The magical fallback is better.
- Energy crunches. A rainy day plus a Revitalizing Potion is functionally a two-for-one day.
Lore aside: for generations, Fairhaven’s “lucky weather” has been the coven quietly doing its chores. Cameron’s League of the Conscious Mind thanks providence; providence wears a mask and a pointy hat.
summon rain the evening you plant, not the morning after — let the sky work the night shift 🌙
Wind & Storm
The blowier siblings get less daily use but have their moments:
- Summon Wind Spell — a day of moving air. Story tasks and certain workings want weather with a bit of drama; wind is the gentle option.
- Summon Storm Spell — one full storm, winds and lightning included. Storms bring rain’s crop-watering benefits wrapped in considerably more atmosphere, and some quests and moods simply call for a storm. Cast it when the plot (or your inner theater kid) demands.
Weather and the wider game
| Activity | How summoned weather touches it |
|---|---|
| Farming | Rain and storms water crops for free; drought pressure eases |
| Fishing | Weather shifts the mood at the water — anglers chasing variety should experiment on summoned days (Fishing) |
| Foraging & town life | Rainy days feel different in Fairhaven — townsfolk and routines carry on, but your umbrella-free witch stays busy indoors or in the mines |
| Rituals & quests | Some story moments expect particular skies; the quest log will tell you when to reach for the storm scroll |
A Weather-Witch’s Planning Table
| Situation | Reach for |
|---|---|
| 40 tiles freshly planted | Summon Rain, cast at night |
| Drought event mid-summer | Summon Rain (and pocket Cameron’s free water anyway) |
| Quest wants dramatic weather | Summon Storm |
| Just need the day to end | Summon Night, then bed |
| Season about to turn | No weather spell saves out-of-season crops — harvest, then ritual (Spells & Rituals) |
Fine Print for New Weather-Workers
- Weather spells last about a day — this is a nudge to the sky, not a new climate.
- Scrolls are single-use; keep one spare rain scroll written for emergencies.
- Weather magic is unlocked partway into the witch story — early-game farmers still befriend their watering can. See Farming 101.
- Don’t summon rain out of habit; summon it out of arithmetic. If the watering would cost more energy than the scroll cost to write, cast away.
tip: keep one rain scroll pressed between these pages for the day the well disagrees with you 🌙
