🚜 Farming 101
Welcome, fellow cultivator, to the first page of your farming journal. When Tara Wylde arrives on Fairhaven to help her grandmother Hazel with the family farm, the soil is waiting — a little overgrown, a little sleepy, and full of promise. This page presses the essentials of that first growing life between its covers: where to plant, how to water, and the island’s one great secret about time.
Hazel will tell you the farm has “good bones.” She is right. She usually is.
Where Things Grow
Crops on the Wylde farm grow in Garden Beds, and those beds live in three areas that open up as you progress:
| Growing area | Character |
|---|---|
| The Garden | Your first plot, close to the farmhouse — flowers and early crops start here, and it is where your beehives will eventually hum (Beekeeping & Orchards). |
| The Vegetable Patch | A larger working space for staple crops once your ambitions outgrow the Garden. |
| The Greenhouse | The crown jewel — under glass, seeds become available year-round, freeing you from the seasons entirely. |
Each bed holds a planting of seeds; keep beds cleared, planted, and watered and they will repay you daily.
The Daily Rhythm
Planting
Buy a packet of seeds, stand at an empty Garden Bed, and sow. One packet fills one bed. Seeds are sold around the island — Lina’s Dahl General Store carries crop seeds, Violet sells flower seeds, and a couple of specialties (cotton and green beans) come from Thomas at his farm. See Shops for the full merchant press.
Watering
Dry soil grows nothing. Fill your Water Pot and give every planted bed a drink each day — a wilting-dry bed simply pauses, so a missed day costs you time rather than the crop. Later, witchcraft offers wetter shortcuts: a well-timed rain does your watering for you (Weather Magic).
water first thing in the morning, before the day runs off with you 🌿
Harvesting
When a crop glimmers ripe, pick it. Harvested goods can be sold, cooked (Cooking), turned into artisan goods, or pressed into potion service (Potions). Some plants give a single harvest; others keep producing — check the Crop Guide before you clear a bed you might regret.
The Seasons Wait for You
Here is Fairhaven’s kindest magic: seasons never change on their own. Spring lasts exactly as long as you want it to. The calendar only turns when the coven performs a season-changing ritual — a deliberate, scheduled act of witchcraft (Spells & Rituals).
This means:
- No time pressure. Take forty days to finish spring if you like. Nothing rots on the vine while you’re off romancing the villagers.
- But harvest before the ritual. When the season does turn, any out-of-season crops still in the ground disappear. The night before a ritual, walk your beds and pick everything that won’t survive the change.
- Weather, by contrast, can be changed with day-to-day magic — rain on demand is a farmer’s dream.
The coven treats the turning of seasons as ceremony, not clockwork. Farm accordingly.
Expanding the Farm
The farm grows alongside you. Story progress and coin unlock more beds, the Vegetable Patch, the Greenhouse, the coop and barn (Animals & the Barn), and orchard space for fruit trees. When money is the bottleneck, the Money-Making page and the profitability notes in the Crop Guide will point you toward the most lucrative rows.
A sensible early loop looks like this:
- Water everything.
- Harvest whatever is ripe.
- Replant empty beds before you leave the farm.
- Spend the rest of the day on quests, friends, Fishing, or the mine (Mining & Foraging).
sign-off tip: before any season ritual, do one slow lap of every bed with your basket — future you will thank present you 🌱
