🐝 Beekeeping & Orchards
Two of the farm’s most patient economies share this page: the hum of the hive and the slow generosity of fruit trees. Neither needs daily fussing the way a turnip bed does — plant well, wait well, and they provide for years.
The Beehive
Setting up
A Bee Hive is a structure placed in the Garden, built for a modest 10 Wood and 50 Coins. Once occupied, it produces the farm’s two golden goods: Honey and Beeswax.
How the bees actually work
The hive’s speed depends entirely on the flowers around it. Bees need fully grown flowers in bloom nearby — the more blooming flowers, the faster the hive fills.
- The magic ratio: about 12 blooming flowers per hive keeps production ticking over daily.
- Fewer flowers still work, just slower; a flowerless hive is a very quiet hive.
- Do not harvest your flowers. This is the counterintuitive heart of beekeeping: a picked flower feeds no bees. Leave your blooms standing unless a quest specifically demands a cut flower.
a flower in the basket is worth less than a flower in the bed 🐝
Flower seeds come from Violet (Shops); sunflowers do double duty in summer as both the best-profit flower and bee fodder (Crop Guide).
What the harvest is for
| Product | Uses |
|---|---|
| Honey | High sell price (Violet buys it), sweetens many Cooking recipes, and makes a lovely gift. |
| Beeswax | A crafting staple — candles and finer goods pass through it (Artisan Goods). |
Somewhere mid-story a quest called Meant To Bee formalizes your beekeeping career. The bees, naturally, were ready before you were.
The Orchard
One seedling, endless fruit
Fruit trees are Fairhaven’s best long-term contract. Kai — the friendly merchant at Kai’s Treasures — sells fruit tree seedlings for 125 coins apiece, and unlike everything else in this journal:
- They grow and fruit in any season, ritual or no ritual.
- They never need watering.
- Bought once, they produce regularly, forever.
The trade-off is patience: an apple tree seedling, for instance, takes 15 days in a garden bed to mature before the fruit begins. Plant seedlings early in your farm’s life and let time do the work.
Field notes
| Consideration | Advice |
|---|---|
| When to plant | As early as you can spare 125 coins — maturity time only passes while the tree is in the ground. |
| Where | Garden beds, like other crops — but budget the space permanently; a tree is not a rotation crop. |
| Season rituals | Trees shrug off the season change that erases out-of-season crops. The orchard is your one truly ritual-proof planting. |
| Rare stock | Kai’s shelves rotate. If you spot the rarer seedlings — pineapple and avocado show up only occasionally — buy them on sight. |
Fruit slots neatly into Cooking, gifts (Gift Preferences), and steady sales.
Pairing the Two
The Garden rewards a deliberate layout: hives among permanent flower beds, orchard rows standing guard behind them. Both systems are “set and collect” — a morning walk past hive and tree takes seconds and pays daily, leaving your energy for the Vegetable Patch, the mine, and the fishing rod.
sign-off tip: plant twelve flowers you promise never to pick, and one tree for every windfall of coins — future harvests are made of old patience 🍯
