❀ The Fairhaven Field Guide ❀

📜 Chapters 7–9

⚠️ Spoilers ahead — major ones. Winter of Year 1: wraiths, accusations, and the rogue witch revealed.

Winter is when Fairhaven’s two smouldering troubles finally catch the same wind. The quests in this stretch braid them together: the island’s supernatural disturbances erupt into the open, and the town’s suspicion of witchcraft boils over with them.

The Wraiths

The strange happenings have a name now: wraiths — malevolent spirits loose on the island. The coven scrambles to contain them, and Tara’s To-Do list fills with the crisis: investigations, protective magic, and hurried midnight circle-work (watch for the aptly named quest Wraithing in Anticipation in this stretch). Every spell and potion you banked in the warmer seasons earns its keep here.

❄️ Lore: the coven draws its power from the Wellspring, the island’s deep source of magic. Whoever — or whatever — is stirring the wraiths seems very interested in it.

The Trials

Fear makes poor soil, and the League of the Conscious Mind plants deep in it. With the disturbances impossible to ignore, talk in town turns to rooting out hidden “Malcontents” among the neighbours — and matters escalate into public trials of suspicion that go further than even some League members are comfortable with. Cameron will later admit he let things go too far; you’ll watch it happen in real time here, and it stings.

One pressing from this stretch, verified and vivid: an anonymous tip reaches Mayor Otto confirming that there are, in fact, witches in Fairhaven — and a mandatory Town Hall meeting follows, with a neighbour standing accused of witchcraft before the whole town. The proceedings take an unexpected turn when Cameron reveals he has seen Otto himself slipping into the woods at night, and the mayor is forced to admit he has been meeting a masked woman in the woods for the past ten years. The accusers, it turns out, have secrets of their own.

Tara walks a razor’s edge in these quests: defending friends without unmasking them, calming the town without lying to it, and keeping Hazel’s wish alive when the island seems determined to split in two.

The Rogue Witch

Then the true culprit steps from the treeline. The disturbances trace back to Vanessa — a rogue witch in a raven’s mask, remembered as the Rude Raven — who, years ago, was barred from joining the Fairhaven Coven by Lina’s father, Markus. Bitter and brilliant, she has been using the wraiths as a distraction while she hunts the heart of the Wellspring, meaning to claim its power for herself.

Her plan curdles in the Gloaming, the shadowed other-side of the island where the final act plays out. Tara, Violet, and Lina find the Raven working her magic on a great tree she believes to be the Wellspring’s heart; Lina warns her to stop, but Vanessa presses on — until the tree unravels to reveal an unconscious woman held inside it: Gloria. A heartbeat later, a wraith escapes the hollow of the tree and possesses Vanessa. The quest Witch Way Did She Go sends the coven racing after her, and its ending tips the story straight into the finale.

Playing This Stretch Well

Pressed here: a blackened leaf from the old tree. It still feels cold. 🌙
